What to Wear for a Kerala Christian Engagement

A Kerala Christian engagement sits between the church and the family home, and the dressing has to belong to both. Too formal and it reads as a wedding. Too casual and the elders are uncomfortable. This is what we dress our clients in for these mornings.

For the bride, quiet and considered

The bride at a Kerala Christian engagement almost never wears white, since that is reserved for the wedding day itself. The most flattering choices are a soft ivory or cream saree with a fine gold border, a pastel Kanjivaram in blush, mint or dove grey, or a set mundu with a coloured blouse in maroon or forest green. A silk with a light body and a considered pallu photographs better than a heavy piece, since the engagement itself is a shorter, more intimate ceremony. Keep the jewellery to a single haaram, a pair of jhumkas and a small maang tikka. The wedding saree blouse guide has more on the blouse shapes and colours that work under these drapes.

For the groom, the set mundu

The classic Kerala groom's choice for the engagement is a set mundu with a broad kasavu border, worn with a soft cream or ivory silk shirt. A pale linen suit in ivory or sand also works for grooms who feel more at ease in western clothes, kept simple, without a printed tie or a boutonnière that competes with the bride's bouquet. Avoid black. Avoid a full three piece suit, which reads as the wedding itself and leaves nothing for the actual day.

For the mothers

The mother of the bride and the mother of the groom set the visual tone of the family in the photographs. A soft silk saree in dusty rose, pale gold, ivory with a coloured border, or a deeper jewel tone in a fine Kanjivaram all photograph beautifully. Both mothers should coordinate the palette without matching exactly, and choose blouses in the same colour family so the family portraits read as one group. A single strand of pearls and a haaram is usually enough.

For the sisters and close family

The bride's and groom's sisters have the most room to bring in soft colour. Pastel Kanjivarams, soft silks with contrast borders, ivories with floral pallus, or a fine kasavu with a coloured blouse all belong. Avoid heavy sequins and any full bridal red, since both take attention away from the couple. If the sisters are also carrying small bouquets or corsages, the bridesmaid bouquets and corsages guide covers the shapes that suit these outfits.

For the guests

Guests at a Kerala Christian engagement dress a step below the couple. Handloom cotton sarees, soft silks, well cut Anarkalis in pastels, and simple set sarees all work. Skip full lehengas and heavy zardozi, which belong at the reception. Modesty at the shoulders and the drape is important if the engagement is happening at the church, since a service or a blessing usually forms part of the ceremony. Comfort matters too, since the day tends to run from the church straight into a long family lunch at the home.

Church versus home

A church blessing calls for a covered pallu, a slightly more formal drape and closed shoes for both the couple and the mothers. A home engagement is more relaxed, with the platter exchange in the drawing room, family photographs on the veranda, and lunch on the long table. If your ceremony moves from church to home over the same morning, choose a saree that survives both settings without a change. Our sarees edit and our bouquets edit are the two places to start when planning the visual palette for the day. The engagement decor at home guide covers the setting itself.
