Bridal Kanjivaram Saree Online Order Checklist

Start with the occasion, not the saree

A muhurtham saree, a reception saree and a nischayam saree are three different pieces even when all three are Kanjivarams. The muhurtham piece is worn in daylight or warm hall light for several hours with heavy jewellery, so it can carry weight and a broad border. The reception piece is worn under stage light with photographs from every angle, so it can be lighter and more colour forward. The nischayam piece sits between the two and is often the one the bride will actually wear again. Decide which function you are shopping for before you look at a single photograph, because the same saree can be right for one and wrong for the other.

Set your band before you browse

Kanjivarams run across a very wide range and the difference is real: the quantity of silk, the density of the weave, the zari used and the hours at the loom. Decide the band you are comfortable with and say it plainly to the seller in your first message. A good studio will show you the best piece inside your band instead of walking you slowly upwards. Saying the number early also protects you from the most common online regret, which is falling in love with a photograph of a piece you were never going to buy.

The questions that tell you what the silk really is

Ask four things. Is the silk pure mulberry, and does the piece carry a silk mark. Is the zari real, meaning silver coated in gold and wrapped on silk thread, or is it tested zari, or is it plain metallic. What is the weight of the saree in grams, which is the closest thing to an honest measure of substance in a photograph based purchase. And is the border and pallu joined in the traditional korvai method, where the border is woven separately and interlocked, which you can see as a fine ridge along the join. Colour behaves differently on a screen

Every phone screen lies a little, and gold zari lies the most. Ask for a video of the saree in daylight near a window and a second video under indoor light, both without any filter, and ask for the pallu to be moved so you can see how the light travels. Deep reds photograph browner than they look in person, mustard photographs greener, and pastels almost always photograph paler. Blouse yardage and measurements

Confirm exactly how much blouse fabric the saree includes. Eighty centimetres is common, but a bridal blouse with full sleeves, a lined body and a designed back often needs a metre or more, and matching that silk later is close to impossible. Ask whether contrast blouse fabric can be sent with the saree. Then send your tailor a full set of measurements early rather than after the saree arrives, because bridal blouse work takes two to three weeks in wedding season and a rushed blouse is the single most common thing brides regret. Fall, pico and the first drape

A heavy Kanjivaram is not ready to wear as it arrives. It needs a fall stitched along the lower edge so the pleats hold and the hem does not fray, and pico along the raw edges. Ask whether the studio does this for you, how long it adds, and whether the fall colour will be matched to the body of the saree. Then plan a draping trial at least two weeks before the wedding, wearing the actual blouse, the actual petticoat and shoes of the height you will wear on the day. Delivery timelines that leave room for trouble

Order a bridal Kanjivaram three months before the wedding if you can, and eight weeks at the very latest. That allows two weeks for the piece to reach you, three weeks for the blouse, and a fortnight of buffer for the alteration nobody plans for. In peak wedding and Onam weeks, courier networks slow down and weavers are already committed, so add a further two weeks. If your date is close, say so at the first message rather than at checkout, and ask for a written dispatch date.

Video calls, returns and what is realistic

Ask for a live video call before you pay. Five minutes of seeing the saree unfolded, the pallu turned over and the reverse of the border settles most doubts that photographs cannot. On returns, be realistic about what any studio can offer on a bridal silk: once a fall is stitched or the piece is cut for a blouse, it cannot come back. Most honest sellers will accept a return on an untouched saree within a short window and will not accept one on an altered one. Get that in writing before you pay, and keep the parcel opening on video the first time, which resolves damage claims in a minute rather than a week.

Care before the wedding, and what you wear it with

Do not dry clean a new Kanjivaram before the wedding. Air it in shade for a few hours, keep it wrapped in cotton mull rather than plastic, and never hang it on a hanger for weeks, because the weight will pull the silk. Keep it away from perfume and from any oil, and pack it flat with the pallu folded outward. Then plan the jewellery and the flowers around the saree rather than after it: a broad zari border wants a shorter haaram, a busy pallu wants restraint at the ears, and a bouquet in a fighting colour will show in every photograph.
