Guide
The Onam gifting guide.
Onam gifting is not about volume. It is about arriving with the right thing, at the right moment, for the right person.
This guide covers the traditional gifts, the modern hamper, corporate ordering, and the timing that keeps everything from becoming a last week scramble.
I
Onakkodi, the gift that carries the meaning
Onakkodi is new clothing given on Thiruvonam, usually by elders to the younger members of the household. For most families this means a kasavu saree, a mundu, or a set mundu, given in the morning before the sadhya.
Give it folded and unwrapped in the traditional way if the household is observant, or in a simple cloth wrap if you prefer a quieter presentation. Loud packaging works against this particular gift.
II
What belongs in an Onam hamper
A good Onam hamper reads as Kerala without becoming a souvenir shop. Banana chips and sharkara varatti, jaggery, a small bottle of coconut oil or a spice set, payasam mix, and one considered object such as a brass uruli or a nilavilakku.
Three to five items chosen well beats twelve items thrown together. Leave out anything that will not survive four days in a car boot.
III
Gifting to hosts on sadhya day
If you are invited for a sadhya, arrive with something small for the household rather than for the host alone. Flowers for the pookalam, a sweet, or a jar of something homemade.
Do not bring anything that requires the host to stop and deal with it. Sadhya day kitchens are already at capacity.
IV
Corporate and team gifting
For teams, decide early between one standard hamper for everyone and a tiered set by seniority. A single standard hamper avoids awkwardness and is almost always the better choice.
Confirm delivery addresses two weeks before Thiruvonam, because half of any Bengaluru team will be travelling to Kerala that week. Ask for a packing list and a photograph of the final hamper before the run begins.
V
Timing and ordering
Place hamper orders three to four weeks before Thiruvonam. Kerala sourcing slows in the final ten days and courier networks into Kerala congest badly in the last week.
Sarees for onakkodi should be chosen a month ahead if a blouse has to be stitched.
VI
What not to gift
Avoid anything sharp, anything in black, and anything that reads as a clearance item. Avoid alcohol unless you know the household well.
Avoid oversized hampers for guests who are flying. A beautiful small box travels; a hamper the size of a suitcase does not.
