Work backwards, never forwards

Take the muhurtham time from the priest, write it at the top of a page, and plan every other item backwards from it in minutes. Planning forwards from a wake up time always produces an optimistic schedule that collapses by nine in the morning. Bride ready at least ninety minutes before

Set the bride ready time at ninety minutes before the muhurtham, not thirty. That gap absorbs the saree adjustments, the jewellery, the photographs with parents in a quiet room and the walk to the hall. Guest arrival is slower than you think

Guests arrive across a wide window, and the last thirty minutes before the muhurtham are the busiest at the door and in the parking area. Have the ushers, the seating coordinator and the signage in place at least ninety minutes before, and reserve the elder seating well before that. Garlands and flowers, timed to the hour

Fresh garlands should reach the venue about two hours before the muhurtham, no earlier in the heat and no later for peace of mind. Name one garland keeper who receives them, checks the count, keeps them in shade or a cool room and carries them to the mandapam at the right moment. Jasmine wilts quickly in Bengaluru and Chennai mornings, so a later delivery is better than an early one, provided the supplier is reliable.

Priest items on the platform early

The ritual items should be on the mandapam a full hour before the muhurtham, laid out and checked against the priest's list. This is the buffer that saves the morning, because a missing item found an hour ahead can still be bought, and one found five minutes ahead cannot. Photographer call time and the quiet room

The photographer should be on site three to four hours before the muhurtham to cover the getting ready sequence, and the video team at the same time to set up. Protect twenty minutes of quiet room time with the bride and her parents before the walk to the hall, and block it on the schedule as a named item, otherwise it disappears. Family portraits go after, not before

Large family portraits should be scheduled after the ceremony, never in the hour before it. Before the muhurtham, everybody is dressing, greeting and moving, and gathering thirty relatives at that hour is the single most reliable way to delay a wedding. After the ceremony, the same thirty people are already in the hall and in one place. Have one person with a written list of the groups to be photographed so the sequence moves.

When lunch opens

Tell the caterer that service opens on a signal from the family food contact, not on a clock time. What cannot move and what can

The muhurtham itself cannot move. The thaali moment inside it cannot move. Almost everything else can. If the morning runs late, the items to compress are the pre ceremony photographs, the extended greetings and the decorative entry, in that order. Never compress the bride's dressing, the jewellery check or the priest's setup.
