Nalangu Ceremony at Home Planning Checklist

What the evening is for

Nalangu is the light hearted ceremony held the evening before or the evening after the wedding, where the couple sit facing each other on the floor and the women of both families lead games, songs and teasing. Turmeric and sandal paste are applied, kumkum is exchanged, small tasks are set, and both sides watch how the other family plays. Its purpose is warmth, not ritual precision, so plan for comfort and sound rather than grandeur.

The room and how to set it

Clear one room completely, ideally the largest one with a plain wall and access to a fan. Push all furniture to the walls and leave a bare floor of at least eight feet by eight feet in the centre. Seating runs around three sides in a horseshoe, with the fourth side kept open for people entering and for the photographer. If the house is small, the front verandah with a curtain of coconut leaves or a simple cotton backdrop works better than a cramped hall.

The floor mat and the seating

Put down a thick cotton dhurrie or a woven mat, and on top of it place two low wooden planks, the traditional palakas, or two firm floor cushions. The couple must be able to sit cross legged for forty minutes in full clothing, so test the height with someone in a saree beforehand. Keep a folded towel under the bride to protect the saree from turmeric water. Around them, the young cousins sit on the floor and the elders take chairs, never the other way around.

Turmeric, sandal and kumkum

Prepare fresh turmeric paste and sandal paste in two small bowls in the afternoon, not days earlier, and keep kumkum in a third. Use pure turmeric only on the hands, feet and cheeks, and warn the bride's family that turmeric stains a light silk permanently, which is exactly why nalangu outfits are chosen with that risk in mind. Have a jug of plain water, a basin and two hand towels within reach so hands can be cleaned between rounds.

Songs and games, chosen in advance

Ask two women from each side to prepare four songs each and to agree the order between them the previous day. The classic games run to a rhythm the family already knows: rolling a coconut across the mat, cracking papad on the head, threading a garland, and the pair of them finding a ring in a pot of coloured water. Write the order on a slip of paper and give it to one person, because a nalangu without a running order becomes twenty minutes of everyone suggesting something.

The trays

Set out three trays: one with the pastes, kumkum, a lamp and flowers, one with the game items including the coconut, papad, ring and bangles, and one with the gifts to be handed over at the end. Line each tray with a banana leaf or a plain cotton cloth. Keeping the game items in a single tray rather than scattered around the house is the difference between a smooth evening and constant interruptions. Snacks and what to serve

Nalangu is an evening event, so serve something light that people can eat standing: murukku, sweet boli, vada, cut fruit and filter coffee or lime juice. Avoid full meals, which end the atmosphere by sending everyone to sit down. Send one tray around to the seated elders rather than making them queue. If the group is large, keep the food in a second room so the ceremony space stays clear and clean.

What the couple should wear

Choose a cotton or a light silk cotton saree in a colour that hides turmeric, such as mustard, deep green, rust or a warm ochre, and a blouse the bride does not mind staining. This is not the evening for a heavy Kanjivaram or for full temple jewellery. The groom is comfortable in a veshti and shirt or a simple kurta. Flower jewellery, if the family uses it, belongs here more than anywhere else, and a jasmine and kanakambaram string in the hair costs very little and lifts every photograph.

Photography in a small room

A house is a hard room to shoot in, so help the photographer by switching off mixed lighting. Turn off cool white tube lights and keep warm lamps on, or the opposite, but never both, since mixed colour temperature ruins skin tones. Leave the fourth side of the horseshoe open, ask guests not to stand directly behind the photographer, and accept a handful of flash frames rather than a dim, blurred set. Gifts and the cleanup nobody plans

The evening usually closes with the two families exchanging small gifts, sarees, a shirt piece, sweets or a silver item, handed over by the elders. Keep them ready in one tray with names on slips underneath. Then plan the cleanup honestly: turmeric water on the floor, papad crumbs, flowers everywhere and forty cups. Assign three younger cousins to a twenty minute clear up with a bucket, a mop and two bin bags, and the household will wake up to a clean room on the wedding morning.
