Bridal Trousseau Packing Checklist for South Indian Weddings

The wedding week itself is not the moment to remember the fall pins. This is the packing method we walk brides through, from the muhurtham saree to the reception morning, so nothing is opened at the venue in a panic.

Pack ceremony wise, not category wise

The single change that saves the most stress is to pack one box per ceremony rather than one box per category. Muhurtham box, reception box, sangeet box, mehendi box, home ceremony box. Each box holds the saree, the blouse, the petticoat, the jewellery pouch, the flowers brief, the footwear and the small accessories for that one event. When the day arrives, only one box is opened. Nothing is hunted for in a stack of suitcases.

Label every box on two sides

Print or handwrite two labels per box, one on the top and one on the long side. Ceremony name, date and time, and a short list of what is inside. This matters more than any bride expects, because the boxes are handled by family, by hotel staff and by the makeup team, none of whom know the plan. A clear label on two sides means no one has to open the box to check.

The muhurtham box

Inside the muhurtham box, the Kanjivaram folded flat with acid free tissue between the folds, the blouse in a muslin pouch, the petticoat in a matching colour, the full jewellery set in a soft lined jewellery roll, the flowers brief with the florist's phone number, a pair of gold sandals in a shoe bag, safety pins, fall pins, a spare hook and eye, a small bottle of double sided tape, and a folded kasavu stole for the walk between rooms. The Kanjivaram care before and after the wedding guide at journal kanjivaram saree care before after wedding covers how to prepare and store the piece around the day.

The reception box

The reception saree is often a jewel toned silk, a designer piece or a family heirloom in georgette or organza. Pack it with a matching blouse, a smoother petticoat, a lighter jewellery set, the reception footwear which usually needs a heel, a small clutch, and the flowers brief for the evening arrangement. Keep the reception jewellery separate from the muhurtham jewellery even if some pieces repeat, since the two sets are worn hours apart in different rooms.

The sangeet and mehendi boxes

Sangeet outfits are heavier on lehenga and lighter on saree, so pack them in a garment bag rather than folded, with the dupatta rolled around a soft tube to prevent creasing. Mehendi outfits are usually the softest and most comfortable, so pack them in a small canvas bag with the flower jewellery and the flat footwear for the day. Add a change of clothes for after the mehendi is applied, so the bride does not sit in stained fabric all evening.

The emergency kit

Every bridal trousseau needs one small kit that travels between rooms with the bride's sister or closest friend. Inside it, safety pins in three sizes, fall pins, hook and eye pairs, a small sewing kit with matching threads, double sided tape, blotting paper, deodorant wipes, a tiny bottle of stain remover for silk, band aids, a small bottle of water, glucose biscuits, painkillers, a lipstick touch up and a spare pair of soft flats. The kit lives in a canvas pouch and never leaves the bride's side.

Packing sarees for transport

Fold each saree along the length in three panels with the pallu on the outside, then along the width in three or four sections aligning the borders. Vary the fold lines slightly between packing sessions so the same crease is not deepened over months of storage. Wrap in a square of unbleached cotton or muslin with acid free tissue between the folds. The pack saree gift for courier guide at journal pack saree gift for courier is the same method used for sending pieces across cities.

Jewellery, in three separate pouches

Pack jewellery in three separate soft lined rolls, one per major ceremony. Never mix temple gold with polki or with diamonds in the same pouch, since the softer stones scratch under the weight of the gold. Photograph every pouch open before it is closed, so if a piece goes missing during the week, there is a reference of what was packed and where. Keep the jewellery with the bride's mother or a trusted family member, not with the makeup team.

Flowers, briefs not boxes

Flowers cannot be packed in advance. What can be packed is the flowers brief, a single page per ceremony with the florist's phone number, the delivery window, the address, the point of contact at the venue, the colour palette and the size of each arrangement. Print two copies. One for the bride's mother, one for the wedding planner. The wedding planning timeline India at journal wedding planning timeline india covers the wider calendar this sits inside.

Courier protection for destination weddings

If the trousseau is travelling by courier to a destination venue, use rigid boxes rather than soft duffels, tape every seam, mark the outer box do not stack, and insure the shipment for the full value. Dispatch at least four days before the first ceremony, not two. Confirm receipt at the venue with a photograph of the boxes unopened in the room. Never courier the primary jewellery. Carry it by hand or hand it to a trusted family member on the flight.
