Onam Gift Hampers: What to Send to a Kerala Family
Most Onam hampers arrive looking generous and feeling generic. A good one holds three or four considered things and one line of handwriting. This is how we assemble them for clients sending home from Bengaluru, Dubai and further away.
Start with a piece of kasavu
The anchor of every Onam hamper is a small piece of kasavu. It does not need to be a full saree. A kasavu mundu, a set mundu shirt piece, or a soft kasavu stole for the daughter in law is enough to make the box feel like Onam and not like a birthday. If the recipient is your mother or mother in law, the kasavu saree is the piece that will actually be worn on Thiruvonam morning and photographed at the sadhya table. Our Onam edit is small on purpose and every piece is woven in Kerala. If you are choosing for someone whose taste you do not know well, a plain cream body with a two inch gold border is safer than a wider selvedge, and it flatters every age.
Two sweets, chosen from Kerala
Add no more than two sweets and choose them from Kerala itself rather than a national brand. A small jar of banana chips fried in coconut oil, a piece of achappam or kuzhalappam, a wedge of Kozhikode halwa in wax paper, or a tin of unniyappam if the courier is fast enough to allow it. Two is the right number. Four begins to feel like a corporate hamper and takes attention away from the cloth.
One or two small festive essentials
The best hampers carry a small essential that quietly gets used through the festival week. A brass uruli for the pookalam, a set of small nilavilakku, a jar of coconut oil pressed at a Kerala mill, a bar of Mysore sandal, or a folded cotton thorthu for the oil bath. Pick one, not three. It should feel like something the family will still be using next Onam.
A handwritten note in the family language
The note is what turns a box of good things into an Onam gift. Handwritten on a small card, one line, in the family language wherever possible. Priya chechi, first Onam without you at the table, we miss you. Amma, wear this on Thiruvonam morning. Do not print it. Do not sign it from the whole family in typed font. One handwriting, one sentence. That is the part of the hamper that gets kept.
Timing and delivery
Thiruvonam falls on 26 August in 2026. To reach a Kerala household in time to open on Uthradam, the day before, aim to dispatch by 22 August for anywhere in India and by 24 August for Bengaluru itself. If you are sending from abroad, place the order at the start of Chingam so we can arrange a courier with time to spare. The Onakkodi gifting guide has more on the tradition of gifting cloth on Uthradam and how families keep it alive across distance.
Packing that survives the road
A hamper for a Kerala family often travels through monsoon rain, so pack it accordingly. The kasavu goes into a linen wrap tied with a silk thread. The sweets are sealed and cushioned with soft paper. The essential is wrapped separately so no oil ever touches the cloth. The card sits on top under the lid so it is the first thing seen when the box is opened. We tie every hamper by hand at the studio and photograph the finished box before it leaves, so you know exactly what your family will see. For the mother specifically, our Onam gifts for Amma guide is the more focused companion to this one.
Frequently asked
Questions we hear about this.
What should I put in an Onam gift hamper for a Kerala family?
Anchor the hamper with a small piece of kasavu, add no more than two Kerala sweets like banana chips or Kozhikode halwa, one small festive essential such as a brass uruli or a jar of coconut oil, and a handwritten note in the family language.
When should I send an Onam hamper to Kerala?
Thiruvonam falls on 26 August in 2026. Dispatch by 22 August for delivery anywhere in India and by 24 August for Bengaluru, so the hamper is opened on Uthradam evening and worn or used on Thiruvonam morning.
Is a full saree needed, or can I send something smaller?
A kasavu saree is the classic Onakkodi, but a kasavu mundu, a set mundu shirt piece, or a soft kasavu stole also work beautifully and keep the hamper feeling like Onam without being oversized.
How do you pack Onam hampers for monsoon delivery?
The kasavu is folded into a linen wrap tied with silk thread. Sweets are sealed and cushioned with soft paper. Any oil based essential is wrapped separately so it never touches the cloth. The handwritten card sits on top under the lid.
