Onam Kasavu Family Photo Outfit Guide

Cream and gold is a base, not the whole plan

Kasavu is unbleached cream cotton with a gold zari border, and when twelve people wear it in the same shade the photograph flattens into one pale block. Keep the kasavu, and add colour deliberately in three places: the blouses, the children's clothes, and the flowers. Those three carry all the variation you need, and the family still reads as one.

Blouse colours that hold the frame

Choose two or three blouse shades for the whole family rather than letting each person pick. Deep maroon, forest green, mustard, peacock blue and temple red all sit correctly against cream and gold and are true to the Kerala palette. Alternate them across the group so no two adjacent people wear the same. Avoid pale pastels for blouses, since a pale blouse against a cream saree is exactly the combination that disappears.

Men, and the mundu question

A cream mundu with a gold or coloured kara and a plain shirt is the simplest and most photogenic choice for men. Cream, sand, olive, deep green and dark maroon shirts all work. Ask the men to fold the mundu to full length rather than half length for the photograph itself, since a half folded mundu reads as informal in a family frame. Children, given a little licence

Little girls in a pattu pavada with a gold border, boys in a small mundu and shirt or a plain kurta. Let the children wear the strongest colours in the family. They move, they are shorter, and their colour anchors the bottom of the frame. Do not put children in stiff or scratchy silks for a morning that includes a sadhya and a full day of running about, since discomfort shows on a child's face immediately.

Jewellery, kept to one register

Onam is not a wedding, and kasavu does not need bridal weight. One good gold set per adult, jhumkas or studs, thin bangles and a simple chain read far better than heavy temple work over cotton. If the elders wear their traditional pieces, let those be the heaviest jewellery in the frame and keep the younger generation lighter. This is a quiet hierarchy that photographs well.

Flowers, the easiest colour you own

Jasmine in the hair for the women and girls, and a short marigold or thulasi arrangement in the frame if the shot is at the doorway. Flowers add both colour and scale, and they place the photograph unmistakably in Onam. Buy them the previous evening and keep them wrapped in damp cotton in the coolest part of the house. Light, indoors and out

Direct midday sun on cream and gold blows out into pure white and puts hard shadows under every eye. Shoot between seven and nine in the morning, or in open shade under a verandah, or with the family in the doorway looking out and the camera inside. Indoors, face everyone towards the largest window and switch off the ceiling tube light, which turns cream a cold grey. Zari catches light beautifully in soft side light and badly in direct overhead sun.

Arranging fifteen people

Elders seated in the centre, adults standing behind, children in front and to the sides. Alternate blouse colours along each row. Keep the tallest at the edges of the back row rather than the middle, so the group forms a soft curve rather than a wall. Take three frames with everyone looking at the camera and three with the family talking to each other, because the second set is the one the family keeps.

School, apartment and family shoots

A school Onam photograph is usually outdoors at mid morning with a hundred children, so ask for cream with strong coloured borders rather than plain cream, which vanishes at that distance. An apartment lobby shoot is under artificial light with a pookalam on the floor, so a low camera angle including the pookalam gives colour to an otherwise pale frame.
