What each one actually is

Fresh flower decor means garlands, strings, loose blooms and arrangements made on the day or the night before, from flowers bought at market that week. Rental decor means structures and surfaces a company delivers, installs and collects: backdrops, arches, stands, artificial flower walls, brass lamps, kolu steps, fabric drapes. Most home weddings use both, and the art is in which one does which job.

Where fresh flowers win

Fresh flowers win wherever the eye and the camera come close. The doorway toranam of mango leaf and marigold that every guest passes under. The jasmine on the bride. The garlands for the ritual. The flowers at the lamp and the pooja space, where fragrance and freshness are part of the worship itself. The arrangement where family photographs will be taken. Anything a guest will touch, smell, or stand within arm's reach of should be fresh; artificial flowers at touching distance read as artificial, always.

Where rentals win

Rentals win on structure and scale. A backdrop behind the ritual space that would take ten kilos of fresh flowers to cover can be a rented panel with fresh flowers arranged along its edges, at a fraction of the cost and with none of the wilting risk through a long hot morning. Lamps, stands, brass urulis, draped fabric and kolu steps are almost always better rented than bought or built, because they are used for eight hours and then need to leave the house. For a terrace or courtyard wedding, rental structures also solve the wind problem; a freestanding arch weighted properly survives an evening breeze that would shred a strung flower frame.

The honest cost comparison

Fresh flowers are priced by weight and labour and the price moves with the season; jasmine and roses can double in a festival week. Rentals are priced per piece per event, with delivery, installation and collection usually extra. Fresh flowers arrive early in the morning and are at their best for six to eight hours, which suits a morning muhurtham perfectly. Rental crews typically need two to four hours to install and an hour to strike, and they need vehicle access, a power point, and sometimes permission from the apartment association or neighbours. Book the rental install for the previous evening if the ceremony is early. Weather and season

Heat is the enemy of fresh flowers and the friend of rentals. A home wedding in the hot months needs hardy flowers, generous water, and shaded placement, or the marigolds surrender by noon. Rain is the enemy of rentals and only a nuisance to flowers; a rented fabric drape in a sudden shower is a problem, while a garland merely glistens. In monsoon season, plan decor that can move indoors in twenty minutes, whichever kind you choose.

A simple way to decide

Make two lists. Everything the guests will touch, smell or stand beside goes on the fresh list. Everything that gives the room shape, height or a surface goes on the rental list.
