Kasavu Saree Accessories: A Quiet Styling Guide for Onam and Weddings

The one rule underneath all of it

Kasavu is cream and gold, which means everything you add is either agreeing with the gold or providing one quiet point of contrast. Choose one of those two and commit. A cream and gold saree with gold jewellery, gold sandals and jasmine is a complete look. A cream and gold saree with a maroon blouse and matching maroon earrings is also a complete look. What does not work is three different accent colours competing across the same frame, which is the single reason a kasavu can end up looking busy in photographs.

Blouse colours that work

Cream on cream is the most traditional and the most photogenic, especially for the morning worship on Thiruvonam and for elders. Gold or antique gold brocade lifts a plain kasavu without introducing colour at all. For contrast, the reliable family is maroon, bottle green, deep teal, rust and a muted mustard, all in matte fabric rather than shine. Keep the sleeve length in the same spirit as the saree: elbow length or three quarter reads classical, very short sleeves read modern and can fight the drape. Avoid pure black for a temple or church function.

Gold, and how much of it

For Onam morning, keep it to a pair of jimikkis, a thin chain, two bangles on each wrist and nothing else. The kasavu is doing the shining. For a wedding where you are a guest, you can add a fuller neckpiece or a palakka mala, but then simplify the ears. For a bride or the mother of a bride in kasavu, a layered set is appropriate, though the classical Kerala look still favours fewer, heavier pieces over many thin ones. Antique or matte gold sits better against unbleached cream than very high polish gold, which can read yellow against it.

Jasmine, and the hair

Jasmine is the accessory that makes a kasavu look like it belongs to the day rather than to a wardrobe. A simple braid with a length of mullapoo, or a low bun ringed with it, is enough. Buy it the morning of, keep it wrapped in damp muslin in the coolest part of the house, and never in the freezer. If the function runs from morning into the night, plan for a second string. For those who cannot wear fresh flowers, a small gold hair ornament at the base of the bun is the traditional alternative and photographs almost as well.

Footwear, bags and the practical layer

Gold, tan or antique bronze sandals with a low block heel will take you through a sadhya, a church service and a long standing reception. Avoid anything with a loud buckle or a bright colour at the foot, which pulls the eye down and out of the frame. For a bag, a small potli or a compact clutch in cream, gold or the blouse colour is right, and a large handbag over the shoulder will crush the pallu. If you are draping in the Kerala two piece style, carry two safety pins and a spare hair pin, and nothing more.

Bindi, bangles and the smaller decisions

A small round bindi in maroon or gold suits kasavu better than a large or ornamented one. Bangles should be even in number on each wrist and should agree with the neckpiece rather than compete with it. Green glass bangles beside gold are traditional in many families and look wonderful against cream. If you wear a watch, take it off for the ceremony photographs. These are tiny decisions and together they are most of what separates a considered look from an approximate one.

Onam, a wedding and a church service are not the same brief

For Onam morning, keep everything light and traditional, because the day involves cooking, serving, sitting on the floor and running after children. For a Kerala Christian wedding, a slightly wider border and a fuller gold set are appropriate, and if a veil is involved, keep it ivory rather than bright white so it agrees with the zari. For a house prayer or a smaller ceremony, dial the jewellery down to almost nothing and let the cloth carry it. The same saree can serve all three with only the accessories changing.

Draping notes that change the look

Narrower pleats read more Kerala, wider pleats read more south Indian six yard. The pallu worn open over the left shoulder shows the border and is the most classical for Onam. Pinned and pleated at the shoulder is easier for a long function and better if you are serving food. Whichever you choose, get the fall stitched and the pico done well in advance, and iron the saree the night before rather than the morning of. What to leave out

No heavy contrast dupatta, no printed or embellished petticoat showing at the hem, no glitter, no plastic flowers and no more than one statement piece. The single most common mistake we see is a beautiful kasavu weighed down by a maximal jewellery set bought for a different saree entirely. If in doubt, remove the last thing you added and look again. That is nearly always the right edit.
