Vishu Gift Ideas for Kerala Families: A Practical Guide

Vishu gifting is quieter than Onam and easier to get right. The rule is simple: something new, something useful, and it should arrive before the kani is set.

What Vishu asks for

Vishu is the Malayalam new year, celebrated in mid April, and everything about the day is about what you see and receive first. The kani is arranged the night before, the elders give kaineettam in the morning, and many families wear new cloth. Gifts therefore lean towards the fresh and the auspicious rather than the elaborate: cloth, sweets, yellow flowers, something for the home. A Vishu gift does not need to be large. It needs to be new, and it needs to be there on time.

Kaineettam, and how gifts sit beside it

Kaineettam is a small sum of money placed in the hand of each younger member by an elder, usually a coin or a note, sometimes on a betel leaf. It is not replaced by gifts and should not be. If you are the elder in the house, give the kaineettam and add cloth or sweets separately. If you are younger and living away, you are not expected to give kaineettam upward, but a saree or a hamper sent to your mother is the natural equivalent and every Kerala household reads it that way.

For parents and grandparents

A light kasavu saree for the women and a mundu for the men is the traditional and safest choice. Keep the border narrower for older recipients; broad zari reads as bridal and is rarely worn. Beyond cloth, the gifts that land well are practical: good coffee or tea, a reliable pressure cooker or mixer if theirs is failing, a comfortable pair of chappals, or an eye check up and new spectacles arranged and paid for. Cloth plus one useful thing is a complete Vishu gift for a parent.

For children in the family

Children receive kaineettam and usually new clothes. A pattu pavada for girls and a mundu with a shirt piece for boys keeps the day traditional, and most children enjoy the dressing up more than the adults expect. Books, a small musical instrument, or anything that lasts beyond a week are better than another plastic toy. If you are sending from outside Kerala, send the cloth to the household and the money through the parents, so the elders can hand it over themselves on the morning.

For in laws in the first year

A newly married couple often gifts both sets of parents at their first Vishu. Keep the two gifts equivalent in weight and warmth, since families notice the difference more than the price. A saree for each mother and a mundu or shirt piece for each father, with a shared box of sweets, is a complete and balanced answer. Write two separate cards by hand. The card is the part that gets kept.

For colleagues, staff and neighbours

Keep these light and consumable. Kerala banana chips, sharkara varatti, jaggery sweets, a small pack of good filter coffee, or a jar of pickle travel well and carry no obligation. If you are gifting to household staff, cash alongside a small cloth gift is customary and appreciated. For a workplace, one shared hamper per team reads better than individual parcels of unequal size. Our note on Onam corporate gifting applies almost unchanged to Vishu.

Sending a Vishu gift from outside Kerala

Most of our Vishu orders come from Malayali families in Bengaluru, the Gulf and further away. Send the parcel to arrive at least two days before Vishu, because the kani is set the night before and the family wants the cloth in hand for the morning. From Bengaluru, allow four working days for a Kerala address and more for smaller towns. Order in the first week of April. Confirm someone will be home to receive it, and ask for a photograph of the parcel before it leaves.

How to present it

No printed invoice inside the box, and no courier bag handed over as it arrived. Fold cloth into plain paper or a cloth wrap, tie it simply, add a konna sprig or anything yellow if you can, and write the card by hand. One line in Malayalam from a son or daughter abroad does more than a page of English. If the parcel is going straight into the kani arrangement, tell the family, so they set it out rather than opening it early.

What not to send

Avoid anything black, anything sharp such as knives, and anything that arrives after the day. Avoid heavy silks; Vishu falls in the Kerala summer and a bridal weight saree will sit in a cupboard. Avoid overly clever hampers full of items nobody in a Kerala kitchen will use. And avoid sending money alone to an elder, which reverses the direction of kaineettam and reads awkwardly in most households.

A short checklist

Confirm the Vishu date for the year. Keep the list short. Cloth first, one useful thing second. Light fabrics only. Match border width to the recipient. Equivalent gifts for both sets of parents. Order in the first week of April. Wrap in cloth or plain paper with a handwritten card. Confirm someone is home. Ask for a photograph before dispatch.

If you would like us to send it

We pack Vishu and Onam parcels for families living away from Kerala, by hand, with no invoice inside. Our sarees edit holds the current pieces and the seasonal Kerala work sits in the onam edit. Tell us who it is for and what the card should say on the begin page and we will send honest photographs of two or three options first.

Frequently asked

Questions we hear about this.

What are good Vishu gifts for parents?

A light kasavu saree and a mundu, with a narrower gold border for older recipients, plus one useful thing such as good coffee, a replacement kitchen appliance or comfortable footwear.

Is kaineettam replaced by gifts?

No. Kaineettam is a small sum placed in the hand of each younger member by an elder. Cloth and sweets sit alongside it rather than replacing it.

When should a Vishu gift be sent?

Order in the first week of April so it arrives at least two days before Vishu, since the kani is set the night before. Allow four working days from Bengaluru to a Kerala address, more for smaller towns.

What should not be sent for Vishu?

Anything black, anything sharp such as knives, heavy silks that will not be worn in the April heat, and money sent alone to an elder, which reverses the direction of kaineettam.
