Onam Corporate Gifting: How to Build a Considered Hamper for Teams and Clients

Decide who the gift is actually for

A hamper for a Malayali colleague who grew up with sadhya is a different object from a hamper for a client who has never celebrated Onam. For the first, authenticity matters and shortcuts are noticed instantly. For the second, the hamper is an introduction and needs a short line explaining what the festival is and what each thing inside it is. Split the list into those two groups before choosing anything. It is usually the only segmentation you need, and it prevents both the patronising note and the unexplained parcel.

Fewer good things, not many ordinary ones

The single reliable rule of corporate gifting is that four excellent items beat twelve average ones. For Onam, that usually means real Kerala banana chips fried in coconut oil rather than the supermarket version, sharkara varatti, a jar of good jaggery or honey, and one dry sweet that will survive a courier. Add a small non food item with some life to it if the budget allows, such as a piece of cloth, a candle or a set of napkins. Skip the filler: the plastic straw, the sachet nobody uses, the branded pen.

Packing that survives an office and a courier

The hamper will be carried on a scooter, left on a desk and possibly taken home on a bus, so it must hold together. Use a rigid box rather than a basket for anything travelling, avoid plastic shredded filler, and seal every food item individually so one leak does not ruin the set. If it is going by courier, the outer carton should be plain and the presentation box should be inside it, so what the recipient opens is not the box that was thrown around. Keep the weight under about two kilograms per hamper for anything hand delivered across a city.

Branding, and how little to use

One small mark on the outer box, or a discreet card, is enough. A logo printed on every item inside makes the hamper feel like stock rather than a gift, and it is the fastest way to make a considered set look cheap. Let the note carry the company voice instead. A short message, signed by a named person rather than by the company, addressed to the recipient by name where the list is small enough, is worth more than any amount of printing.

The note is the gift

Two or three sentences, specific rather than generic. What the festival means, one line of thanks for the year, and a wish for the family rather than for the individual, since Onam is a family festival. Avoid the word leverage and anything that sounds like a quarterly update. If you can manage handwriting for the top thirty names on the list, do that and print the rest. Recipients notice, and the handwritten ones get photographed and shared.

Timing the delivery

Aim to land in the four days before Thiruvonam, ideally on Uthradam, the day before. On Thiruvonam morning most Malayali households are at the temple, cooking sadhya or travelling, and a parcel that arrives then is a nuisance rather than a gift. For office delivery, check the working days, because many teams take leave through Onam week. For home addresses, confirm somebody will be there, and add three or four working days for outstation and Kerala destinations.

Order deadlines that actually hold

Three weeks before Thiruvonam for a Bengaluru only list. Four weeks if the list is spread across India. Five weeks for Kerala addresses, which slow down considerably as the festival approaches. Inside two weeks, you will receive what is available rather than what you chose, and inside one week you will be paying a premium for a compromise. Freeze the recipient list two weeks before dispatch, because late additions are the main cause of missed deliveries.

The data you need before you can order

One clean sheet with full name, delivery address with pincode, a working phone number, and whether it is a home or office address. Chase the blanks yourself rather than assuming, because a hamper going to an incomplete address will bounce and it will not come back in time. Mark any dietary constraints in a column, and mark the ten or fifteen names who should receive a larger version. That sheet is the whole project. Everything else is procurement.

A workable structure for most companies

Three tiers usually cover it. A standard hamper for the team, a slightly larger version for senior clients and long standing partners, and a small number of individual pieces such as a saree or a fine cloth for the handful of relationships where that is appropriate. Keep the palette and the packing identical across tiers so nobody feels sorted into a category, and change what is inside rather than how it looks. Order five percent extra of the standard tier for the names that appear at the last minute.
